The 2017 NFL season is heading into the final few weeks as the playoff picture is starting to take shape for some teams. For other teams these last two games could play a key role in the future of the their teams as the 2018 NFL Draft order is also starting to take shape outside of the potential playoff teams.
One team that should have their eyes set on the top overall pick is the Cleveland Browns who will have a ton of homework to not only do these next two weeks but also till the day of the draft. For now the Browns will need to evaluate whether or not Deshone Kizer is the future for them under center. If that is the case this could be another year the Browns trade back to land additional picks not only for this year but also for the future as this year’s class should have a ton of top tier quarterback options.
That said the big question is how many potential quarterbacks could go in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft? Here is a look at the potential quarterbacks who should hear their name called in the first round.
Josh Rosen – UCLA Bruins
Here is a name that should be on everyone’s big board as the 2018 NFL draft rolls around. The Bruins quarterback has all the tangibles to be a great quarterback at the next level including size (6’4’’), mechanics and the ability to stay in the pocket to make plays. Rosen finished the regular season throwing for 3,756 yards to go with 26 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Look for Rosen to potentially be the number one overall pick taken in 2018.
Baker Mayfield – Oklahoma Sooners
How can the Heisman Trophy winner not be on everyone’s first round list? Yes, he acted childishly down the stretch but for us those acts showed he not only has passion for the game but also to prove others wrong. One downfall you get with Mayfield is his height but on the plus side you get a quarterback who shows he can make nearly any throw asked as well as a player who can take over a game when asked to do it.
Sam Darnold – USC Trojans
Now sure exactly whether or not the Trojans quarterback elects to come back for another season or to enter the 2018 NFL Draft. Like Rosen, Darnold has the tangibles and abilities to be a big time quarterback. The question for NFL evaluators is whether or not he takes too many gambles while electing to rush his progressions? In the end he still found a way to complete nearly 64% of his passes for 3,787 yards to go along with 26 touchdown passes.
Lamar Jackson – Louisville Cardinals
Jackson is a dangerous weapon that can not only make plays happen with his arm but also with his feet. The former Heisman Trophy winner has showcased over the past two seasons not only that he has a big arm but he can use it both in the pocket as well as on the run. Look for a team to take a shot on Jackson to not only step in at quarterback but also to be a potential franchise type quarterback.
Josh Allen – Wyoming Cowboys
Here is a name that might be climbing up the draftboards for some of the NFL teams around the league. While he looks to be a gamble type play he does have great size something that many teams have started to value higher at the quarterback position. If he elects to enter the draft his play into the first round may come down to how he performs at his team’s pro day.
Other quarterbacks who could go in the first round include Drew Lock and Mason Rudolph.
For now at least four of these guys should be going in the first round, time will only tell if we start to see the numbers increase to six, seven or even eight as teams look to build for the future.
