Remember the kid who woke you up Saturday mornings. You heard the whir, whir, whir, CRUNCH of his skateboard as it made the jump from the sidewalk to the street. Over and over again he practiced his craft as you put the pillow over your head. Well, that kid made a name for himself and will be in Long Beach, California this weekend. He’s competing in the Dew Tour Skateboarding Competition. But, the Dew Tour’s Long Beach stop is more than skateboarding. It’s competition, art, and personal expression through both. Gildshire will be there in person. If you can’t join us, you’ll still be able to download the free Dew Tour app and follow on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and YouTube @DewTour.
“Who is going to be there?” We’re glad you asked. One of Gildshire’s favorites on two wheels is Ivan Federico! Ranked 14th overall, Federico finished last season 6th in the world with 8,020 contest points and earnings of almost $45,000. Known best for the park skate discipline, “The Fed” is moving up the ranks in street and vert-bowl, as well.
Sean Malto will be on hand. Fully recovered from the 2013 ankle injury that sidelined him for three years, Malto is just coming into his own as a skater. Before getting hurt, Sean took top honors in 2011 when he was victorious at the Super Crown World Championship in just his second year of full-on competition.
Named after surf champion Tom Curren, young Curren Caples was destined to go fast and fly high. Now at the ripe old age of 22, Curren is at the top of his game. Ranked 18th in the world and climbing with a bullet, Curren has a following outsized to his impressive competition credentials. In fact, Mr. Caples has almost a half million Instagram followers and his YouTube videos have been viewed almost four million times!
Louie Lopez will feel right at home in Long Beach, and why not? Raised 18 miles away in Hawthorne, the 23-year-old Lopez hopes familiarity with the competition site will give him a leg up on the other skaters. He doesn’t need much help. Ranked 9th overall and a whopping 5th in the street discipline, Lopez should be considered a favorite in this iteration of the Dew Tour.
But, if you are looking to follow the athletic exploits of a skateboarding superstar look no further than Alec Majerus. This two-time X-Games medalist (bronze in X Games Austin 2014, and silver in X Games Minneapolis 2017) will capture the imagination of the crowd at Dew Tour Long Beach. The 23-year-old Goofy-stance ripper from Rochester, MN, grew up skating in basements, garages and the cold, windy streets of Minneapolis. Do you think he will find warm Long Beach easy to adapt to? Look for Mr. Majerus to improve his already lofty 9th-place ranking in the street discipline.
These and many more skateboard pros will tear up the Long Beach ocean-front, and that would make for a great day. But, Dew Tour Long Beach is a celebration of art through boarding and art through art creation. The groundbreaking Secret Walls exhibit/competition will be happening at this event. Secret Walls is the world’s largest live art event. Artists battle against each other in a dramatic timed contest of artistic skill. Who wins at the end of the day? Well, art lovers, of course, but the art is judged by audience acclaim after art teams compete on a single white wall, using only black markers or acrylic paint. At the end of a grueling hour and a half, art is created and a winner declared.
A youth version of Secret Walls, called School Walls, will also take place at Dew Tour Long Beach. After the art competition, students will receive choreographed street dance lessons led by renowned Long Beach dance instructor Steve “Zulu Gremlin” Roybal.
“What if I don’t like skateboarding and wall art bores me?” Well, you might be interested in a clothing line that will be revealed at Dew Tour Long Beach.
“A clothing line? Now, we’re talking!”
Yes indeed. Mountain Dew and LAKAI are combining forces for a new line. They worked with designer Pawel Swanski to create a unique streetwear capsule collection that will be released at Dew Tour.
“Can I buy some there?” No, but you will be able to buy some in mid-July when the line is launched publically.
If this all sounds like a good time, join Gildshire at the event. It is free to get in, but if you want a truly close-up and immersive experience, VIP tickets are available at DewTour.com. We’ll see you there!
