Novelty or Accuracy? What’s more Important?
According to a recent study, more than 70% of 1,500 scientists reported not being able to reproduce other scientific findings at least once. Furthermore, around 50% of scientists said that they had a problem reproducing their own results. Recently, more than ever scientists are talking about reproducibility crisis, due to a significant number of research that does not hold up when repeated by a different group of scientists or by the same team of scientists who found those findings in the first place.
The main reason tends to be money or profit that could be based on the particular research results. Many scientists also feel pressured to release positive results and to find correlations to publish as many papers as possible. The important thing is seeing the difference between the real science and irreproducible results that tend to be pure garbage.
What is the solution? The replication studies should be more common than they are today. Scientific magazine, eLife started an initiative to reproduce and validate critical scientific findings in the field of cancer research. According to their recent results, 2 out of 5 research findings were reproducible. Rerun studies should not be restricted only to cancer research, and it should be done in various fields.
The main issue is the request of novelty, while rerun studies are not really interesting for investors. Furthermore, research journals want to publish only findings which will be more often cited, not the results of a rerun of an older research. Hopefully, science will be more focused on science than journals and money flow.
Philadelphia Science Museum has a New Name
From the next month, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, the science history museum and research library in Philadelphia will change its name to “Science History Institute.”
After the museum merged with an organization dedicated to science, the museum grew, and this reflects the change of the name as well.
Robert Anderson, president, and CEO of the museum said: “Our collections and our interests are broadening. We used to be just the Chemical Heritage Foundation because the chemistry was what we did.”
The primary focus of the museum will still be the history of engineering, chemistry and the life sciences, but the name change will leave more room for expanding to cover different fields of science.
“It’s an all-encompassing sort of name, which will be, I think, very useful to us in the future,” Anderson said. Furthermore, Anderson stressed the importance of the corresponding to the public’s interests, which could take the museum beyond strictly defined fields of science. “We don’t want to draw lines between particular sciences. We don’t want to feel we are excluding areas of science we are interested in.”
For example, a new exhibit ”Grid and Flow” will focus on water quality issues that Philadelphia’s citizens experienced over the years.
The museum will also launch a website with a digital collection of more than 5000 items, including museum objects, artwork, and books. Furthermore, the museum plans to raise funds for a physical expansion of the museum, including creating a new gallery with a collection of paintings.
Exercise Won’t Help You Lose Too Much Weight
