While many of us were relaxing this Labor Day weekend, the players at the US Open were giving it their all. On Saturday, Roger Federer smoothly beat Feliciano Lopez in with sets of 6-3, 6-3, and 7-5. On Monday, Federer battled it out with German player Phillip Kohlschreiber, where after the second set he had to take a medical time-out. Since Federer hurt his back earlier this year, spectators were concerned. However, Federer quickly returned and advanced with 6-4, 6-2, and 7-5 sets. Federer will face Juan Martín del Potro from Argentina in the quarter finals tomorrow.
For Rafael Nadal of Spain, this US Open has been hard-fought. On Saturday, he beat Leonardo Mayer with four sets of 6-7, 6-3, 6-1, and 6-4. When asked about the possibility of meeting Federer, Nadal said he wanted to focus on his next match with Alexandr Dolgopolv.
That played out on Monday with a very impressive showing by Nadal, who beat Dolgopolv 6-2, 6-4, and 6-1. This advances Nadal into the quarterfinals for the fifth time, and the first time since 2013.
On Friday, 18-year old Denis Shapovalov of Canada beat Kyle Edmund in 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, and 1-0 sets, becoming the youngest player since 1989 to advance to the fourth round. On Sunday, however, Shapovalov fought hard against Pablo Carreno Busta (Spain) in three tiebreak sets. This marks the end of this year’s US Open for Shapovalov, who will certainly be a player to watch in the future.
Pablo Carreño Busta of Spain advanced to the semi-finals by beating Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. Busta’s performance at the US Open has been nearly perfect, the 12th seed has not dropped a set through five matches at the Open, he will make his first appearance in a Grand Slam semifinal on Friday.
For the women, Venus Williams beat the Greek competition on Friday, easily winning in 6-3, 6-4 sets against Maria Sakkari. On Sunday, Williams faced Spain’s Carla Suarez Navvaro and won her first set. After a loss in the second, Williams rallied to take the third, and advanced to the quarterfinals. This will be Williams’ 12th quarterfinal at the US Open. She will play Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic today (September 5th).
Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia is another female player in today’s quarterfinals after her thrilling victory over Maria Sharapova. The two women battled in a three-set match that saw Sharapova experimenting with her left hand and ending with 51 unforced errors to Sevastova’s 14. The match ended with a score of 5-7, 6-4, and 6-2. Sevastova, a 16th-seed, plays against Sloane Stephens.
