Work and fun in the same sentence? Impossible! Traditionally, work is not supposed to be fun, arguing that having fun whilst working does not equate to being productive. However, the phrase ‘a fun workplace’ does not have to be an oxymoron. A working environment that fosters fun is characterized by positive energy, high self-esteem, and good team spirit and this in turn can lead to increased production.
Here are a few ways to inject some fun into your workplace…
Personalize your space
Introduce some fun by adding elements that will make you and your colleagues smile – funny wall art, stickers, mascots or toys etc. Don’t let office ‘neatness’ rules get in the way of personalizing your office space and making it your own.
Break out of the box!
Don’t’ default to the boring work mode the moment you pass reception. Break out of the ordinary by doing something unexpected on a daily basis. Tell a funny story, wear a crazy tie, send an odd email to a colleague, or sing aloud. Taking such chances breaks the tension and facilitates an atmosphere of acceptance, freedom, and trust.
Spice up the snacks in boardroom meetings and introduce an element of fun by adding some reminiscent childhood sweet treats, such as lollipops, candy sticks and bubble-gum. Lighten the atmosphere by opening or closing meetings through sharing a funny incident that happened on the job.
Take Casual Friday to a New Level
Take casual Friday to a new level by instituting a monthly theme, such as ‘The Friday Blues’ or ‘Movie Friday’ where staff have to dress up accordingly. Alternatively, wear something frivolous – every day if appropriate. It doesn’t have to be visible – the fact that you have this ‘fun’ item of clothing on will remind you not to take yourself so seriously.
