Speaker of the House Paul Ryan gavels open the Republican National Convention Monday under the theme of “Making America Safe Again.” The theme is a takeoff on presumptive nominee Donald Trump’s “Make America Great” campaign slogan. It all be followed by similar “Make America ___ Again” in the days to come.
Mr. Trump has promised prospective viewers that his nominating convention will put some “showbiz” on the table. Indeed, the lineup for Day One delivers some Hollywood. Scott Baio, known primarily for his television persona as half of “Joanie Loves Chachi,” is scheduled to speak. Soap opera hunk Antonio Sabato Jr. will also make a speaking appearance at the dais. Mr. Sabato’s claim to fame is his career on “The Bold and the Beautiful,” as well as on “General Hospital.”
Later in the evening, the theme of safety and national security will take center stage when at least one family member of a slain serviceman from the Benghazi attack will speak. The anti-immigration voice of the GOP will be heard from Monday night, as well. It is expected that a family member of someone killed by an undocumented immigrant will take the stage.
The highlight of Monday night for convention attendees will take place when Mr. Trump’s wife Melania will address the convention that will nominate her husband. Mrs. Trump is a Slovene-American jewelry and watch designer and former model. She is expected to take a larger role in the general election than she did during the primary season. Observers expect Trump’s daughter Ivanka to make a convention appearance, as well.
All of this comes on the heels of yet another shooting on the streets of America. This time, a lone gunman opened fire on Baton Rouge, LA police officers, killing three. The GOP hopes to starkly highlight the Obama Administration, and Hillary Clinton, against the backdrop of the current wave of violence in American cities. If they are able to make that resonate with the voters, the GOP candidate will have a real chance for November victory.
