The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan holy leader, celebrated his 80th birthday in New York City, sharing a meditation session with his followers.A prayer known as a “White Tara”for a long life and empowermentwas organized on Friday, July 10. The ceremony for Dalai Lama’s birthday was organized at the Javits Convention Center on West 34th street in New York City.
During China’s invasion on Tibet, the holly leader went to China in 1954 to ask for peace and to talk to China’s dictator, Mao Zedong. Nevertheless, his Holiness was forced to leave Tibet in 1959, when Chinese troops killed tens of thousands of men and women. The Dalai Lama left for India and since then he has been leaving in Dharamsala, northern part of India.
The Dalai Lama transferred his political power to democratically elected leader on May 29, 2011. This was an end of 368 year old tradition of the Dalai Lamas being both political and spiritual leaders of Tibet.
