COVID – 19 is changing the way we live around the world. Europe is ready to open after COVID – 19 lockdowns across the continent.
Different countries in Europe had a different approach to COVID – 19. From Spain and Italy where social distancing was mandatory to Norway where everything remained open and it was up to citizens to decide which approach they will take.
Is Europe Ready to Reopen?
Many countries in Europe are preparing to reopen, even schools. There are some conflicting bits of advice from scientists where some caution us against underestimating the high potential of children spreading the virus. Many schools in Norway and Denmark are already open. On top of this, Emmanuel Macron, the president of France is going against the advice of the scientific committee by announcing that they plan to reopen primary and nursery schools by May 11th.
Playgrounds in Germany began reopening on the 1st of May and children aged 11 and 12 are returning to schools.
The measures are there. European countries will introduce hygiene measures from disinfection regimes to strict handwashing, physical distancing on playgrounds. Things are not going to be the same as they were before. For example, schools in Germany are removing sports and music lessons from their curriculum since they are a greater risk.
Still, some parents are reluctant to send their kids to school. After all, scientists believed that children with coronavirus are as infectious as adults. Furthermore, children are more likely to be asymptomatic and spread the virus without any knowledge that there is an infection in the child.
Opening schools while assuming that children are less likely to spread the virus compared to adults could be dangerous. But, some argue that we can’t live isolated forever.
Why Opening Schools Matters?
If you want to open all businesses, you need to start with transportation and schools. Once transportation and schools are open then businesses can start opening. Many employees are parents and they depend on where their children are during their working hours.

Some countries in Europe such as Norway had no restrictions and some like Spain had strict restrictions. It’s hard to tell what the right approach is now when we still don’t have enough information on the virus. Does any approach work for any country? It’s hard to say. Only time will tell.
