James Bond is an iconic character that may be known the world over. Whether the fan obsession started with Dr. No or newer movies such as Casino Royale and Skyfall, there are diehard fans around the globe. However, as most fans will share openly, there have been many actors who have played the always handsome superspy, all of which are loved by someone. Each of these actors have brought something special to the James Bond character. Read on to learn about each of the actors that have taken on this iconic role.
Sean Connery, possibly one of the best known Bond actors was born in Fountainbridge, Scotland and has played 007, seven times starting in 1962 with the release of Dr. No. Connery also starred in From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, and Never Say Never Again(unofficial). Only a true Connery fan would know his little secret about James Bond; since Connery began losing his hair at an early age, all the Bond characters were played wearing a toupee.
George Lazenby who only played Bond once is often forgotten for a reason, he starred in On Her Majesty’s Service in 1969. Roger Moore from Stockwell, UK took to film playing 007, seven times in Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy who Loved Me, Moonraker, For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, and A View to a Kill. With Connery’s blessing, Moore took over the role of James Bond, but not once in his seven movies did he order the famous ‘shaken, not stirred’ vodka martini.
Timothy Dalton, a UK native played 007 twice. He starred in The Living Daylights and License To Kill. Though his second film possibly ended his career due to lack of success, it is sometimes regarded highly by fans who appreciate the realism. Even director John Glen felt this film was his best for Bond, but the box office showed otherwise.
Daniel Craig has been signed to play Bond in five movies, but has only created three. Beginning in 2006 with Casino Royale followed by Quantum of Solace and continuing with Skyfall in 2012, Craig is the Bond of newer generations. In Craig’s second Bond movie, 200,000 blank bullet rounds were used for both practice and filming.
Two other Bonds that deserve recognition are Barry Nelson and David Niven, each only playing 007 once in the early films Climax Series: Casino Royale and Casino Royale (…is too much for one James Bond) respectively. Neither movie was an ‘official’ Bond movie, but these actors portrayed the character with flare as those who followed.
