New York Manhattan / Las Vegas Strip
You weren’t planning on any more summer trips. The big one at the end of June turned out to be more expensive than planned. The weekend getaway in July was fun but too short. You had decided to tuck your traveling self away until the holidays, or even next year.
But MAN it’s hot! The humidity is so high the goldfish are comfortably hovering in midair. And the holidays are too far away.
It sounds like a Labor Day getaway is just what you need. Gildshire understands, Bunky. That’s why we’re here. We compiled a list of possible Labor Day getaways available at the last minute. None of these trips will sell out before next Friday. None of them have jacked up their prices in an effort to hold the traveler hostage. And they are all fun places to visit. Sound good? Then let’s go!
New York City: There are some surprisingly good deals on both flights and hotels. A round trip flight from Chicago O’Hare to JFK is just $199 for a Thursday departure and a Monday return. We are recommending the Astor on the Park Hotel for your New York adventure. Rooms are $119 a night, and the location is central to many of the things that make NYC New York City.
Las Vegas: If you are going to be hiding from the sweltering heat over Labor Day anyway, you might as well do it in the air-conditioned plushness that is Vegas. A cheap flight, even at this late date, can be had from the L.A. area. But you have to be clever (or a friend of Gildshire). The best flight to L.V. out of L.A. isn’t from LAX or even Orange County. It’s out of Long Beach! Just $253 buys you a Thursday flight to and a Monday flight from the bright lights of America’s most deliciously decadent city. We recommend the Green Valley Ranch Spa, Hotel, and Casino for a different kind of Vegas experience. Rooms are $155 a night, but the pampering you will receive makes you want to return again.
Honolulu: Really? A last minute trip to Hawaii at an affordable price? Man! Aren’t you glad you came here rather than looking at cat pictures on Facebook? Indeed just a little flexibility on your part can make it happen even at this late date. The flexibility part comes on the flight time. Your flight out of LAX is going to go to Phoenix first. That makes your total flight time a little over ten hours. But that amount of flexibility means you can book this flight for just $654 round trip. When you get there we suggest the Pacific Beach Hotel. Four-star comfort for just $154 a night.
Miami: “The sun and fun capital of the world” according to the late Jackie Gleason is surprisingly affordable over the Labor Day just ahead. A round tripper from Chicago O’Hare to Miami International is just $222. It’s a 6 a.m outbound flight but for that number, you might expect a full-on red eye. We like the GALLERYone Hotel. There you will find a water view room for just $157 a night.
London aerial view
London, England: Holy cow! You really are impulsive! A last minute jaunt to London? Okay, let’s see what we can do. With a little (okay, a lot) of flight time flexibility, we can hook you up. For $1358 round trip you can fly out of JFK and land in Heathrow. You will spend the weekend in London, leave Monday and arrive home Tuesday night. Why such long time coming home? Because you had a three-hour layover in Madrid on the way to the United Kingdom…and a 21-hour layover in Madrid on the way home. Think of it as two trips in one. Where are you going to stay while in Merrie Olde? We like the Thistle City Barbican. It will run just $99 a night and give access to Buckingham Palace and all that is special about mid-town London.
We think you can find a pretty good place to go over Labor Day from that list. Watch this space for other travel ideas in the days to come. We love to go!
