The countdown to the 2017 NFL Season continues to march along as we slowly approach August. While most of the players are still enjoying summer vacation, most of the head coaches are working hard day in and day out to put together a plan for their upcoming training camps.
For a few of those head coaches this year’s training camp could play a key role in their long term stay with their respective clubs. Like most seasons, as the NFL Season starts it also starts another new debate: which head coaches are on the hot seat around the league.
This year will be no different as there are a few head coaches who could be shown the door if they don’t see a playoff berth or even a postseason run to the Super Bowl. Here is our list of possible NFL head coaches who could be in the hot seat entering the upcoming NFL Schedule.
John Harbaugh – Baltimore Ravens
At the top of our list is the Baltimore Ravens head coach, despite his solid success in the first six seasons including bringing the city another Super Bowl title. That being said the team has missed the playoffs in back to back seasons including last year after starting the season at 3-0. The Ravens were also in a position sitting at 8-6 with two games left but dropped back to back divisional contests including a heart breaker in Pittsburgh. Along with missing the playoffs, Harbaugh has made his fair share of bad calls from going for it on fourth down and mismanaging the time clock.
Bill O’Brien – Houston Texans
While the Texans have been solid under O’Brien, a failure to make the playoffs or even a trip to the Super Bowl could cost O’Brien his job, opening the door for another head coach to close the door. While the lack of quarterback play might not have been O’Brien’s fault he is partially at fault for his role in bringing the former Denver Broncos quarterback to town. If O’Brien doesn’t lead his team to the postseason in 2017 he could be on the free agent market of head coaches for the 2018 NFL Season.
Sean Payton – New Orleans Saints
All good things must eventually come to an end and that could be the case in New Orleans depending on the outcome of the 2017 NFL season. While Drew Brees continues to get another year older, the rumors swirling around Payton continues to grow each offseason. This includes being linked to the Dallas Cowboys just a few seasons ago and the Los Angeles Rams this offseason. If the Saints can’t find a way to get into the playoffs this season the team should think about moving in a different direction to start 2018.
The other NFL head coaches who could be in the hot seat in 2018 include Marvin Lewis and Chuck Pagano.
