The beginning of a long 2018 NFL Schedule has arrived as all 32 teams have arrived at training camp to being preparations. While the 2018 NFL Season looks to deliver a ton of exciting storylines, from the tension in the New England Patriots organization to the arrival of John Gruden back on an NFL sideline for the Oakland Raiders.
While those storylines are big stories to watch, here are a few of the key storylines we like heading into the 2018 NFL Season.
2018 NFL Draft Class Impact on their Teams
Every offseason leading into another NFL Season, the NFL Draft takes place delivering new prize weapons for all 32 NFL teams. The 2018 NFL Draft is no different and might be one of the more exciting classes we are looking forward to seeing on the football field over the past few seasons. This year’s draft included some big name quarterbacks such as Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen and Lamar Jackson all going in the first round. That said, while the quarterbacks headlined the first round, they won’t be the only rookies making an impact. The stud of the draft Saquon Barkley is the player we have our eyes set on as he looks to help the New York Giants bounce back in 2018. Barkley is a dual threat running back who has the talent to be effective both in the running game as well as a big time threat in the Giants’ passing attack. Along with Barkley. other top rookies that we are keeping our eyes on include defensive end Bradley Chubb, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, wide receivers D.J. Moore and Calvin Ridley and running back Sony Michel.
Head Coaches in the Hot Seat Fighting for their Jobs
While no one wants to see any coaches lose their job, this is one of the big headlines everyone around the NFL including fans and the sports media pay extra close attention to. That said, the 2018 NFL season should deliver some additional headlines involving some of the top head coaches in the NFL. The list could include Mike McCarthy of the Green Bay Packers. While the team lost start quarterback Aaron Rodgers for most of last season, that may be the only reason they kept McCarthy this offseason. Another failure to deliver a Super Bowl in 2018 could open the door for a new head coach as they waste away the prime part of Rodgers’ career. Other head coaches could include Mike Tomlin as they continue to come up just short despite having possibly the most talented squad around the NFL. Other names include John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens, Marvin Lewis of the Cincinnati Bengals, Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys and Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks.
The End of Careers of Top NFL Stars
Another top storyline that we like to pay attention to every NFL season is the list of players who may be near the end of their playing careers. Last season we saw possible Hall of Famer tight end Jason Witten end his career, while Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor continues to battle an injury that might have forced his career end in 2017. As the 2018 NFL Season gets set, another group of stars may be entering their final season headlines the group. One of those stars is Antonio Gates who continues to lobby for a chance to sign with an NFL team this offseason. Gates who dominated the NFL as one of the top offensive threats for many years is nearing the end of his playing days and 2018 could be the final time we see him on the field. Gates has recorded 927 career catches with 11,508 yards and 114 touchdowns. Other stars who could play their final games in 2018 include wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, defensive end Terrell Suggs, running back Frank Gore and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
For now we all can sit back, relax and enjoy the NFL training camps while we wait for the opening kickoff of the 2018 NFL Regular Season.
