If you live in a big city, the chances are you are happier and healthier than you would be if you lived in a small town. According to a new study, residents of the major cities are healthier since they have more options, better transportation, more available parks and sidewalks to run, exercise or to go to work on a bike.
In a report, researchers have listed top five healthiest cities in the US, and surprisingly they are Boston, San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. The polling group, Gallup and consultant firm Healthways said in a statement: “Residents in these top five communities have, on average, significantly lower rates of smoking, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression compared with those in the five lowest-ranked active living communities.”
Top five cities who are on the bottom of the list are Tulsa; Durham, North Carolina; Indianapolis; Oklahoma City and Fort Wayne. Other groups had similar results, where the American College of Sports Medicine ranked Washington as the fittest city in the US, alongside with Minneapolis. In many polls, the last place repeatedly goes to Memphis or Indianapolis.
Americans have pretty high levels of diabetes, heart disease and more than two-thirds are overweight or obese, but people in big cities are more motivated to go out and exercise.
