San Francisco 49ers / Kyle Shanahan
The start of the upcoming 2017 NFL League year is just around the corner as teams get set to start to build for the upcoming season. This year’s offseason features a solid free agent class, an overall good draft class and the possibility of a few big names finding a new home.
One of those teams that should be very active this offseason is the San Francisco 49ers who already made a big time splash by bringing in Kyle Shanahan. The former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator helped turn around an up and down Atlanta Falcons team, helping to guide them to Super Bowl LI.
Now Shanahan and the 49ers new general manager John Lynch will begin their first offseason together. An offseason that should be very active as the team looks to get back on track from what might be one of the most disappointing seasons in the team’s history.
One name that will be high on the 49ers radar this offseason is quarterback Kirk Cousins who may be available as a free agent or through a trade depending on what the Washington Redskins elect to do with him. Cousins who took a gamble on himself last season accepting the franchise tag versus signing a longer term deal put together another impressive season.
Cousins completed 67 percent of his passes during the season for a career high 4,917 yards to go along with 25 touchdown passes. A move to acquire Cousins would solidify the 49ers biggest need this offseason while giving Shanahan a young stud quarterback much like he had with Matt Ryan in Atlanta.
Here are three other players the San Francisco 49ers could target this offseason through trade, free agency or the NFL Draft.
Alshon Jeffery – Wide Receiver
If the 49ers land a new quarterback this offseason the team will need to bolster up a very weak wide receiver corps. One name that should be high on their board is Alshon Jeffery who when healthy is a pure number one receiver giving the team a big time weapon for that new quarterback.
Dalvin Cook – Running Back
Cook might not be the pick where the 49ers currently hold their selection but he would be a great option if the team elected to drop down a few picks while stock piling a few extra picks. Cook would form a solid one two punch with Carlos Hyde, something that Shanahan had with the Falcons two headed running game.
Kiko Alonso – Linebacker
Since losing Patrick Willis, the 49ers have not been able to build a solid defense that includes at the linebacker position. While some of it may be bad luck due to injuries the team still had their troubles. This offseason with the cap space the team has available, the team could look to Alonso as a fit to plug the inside position while the team also turns to the draft.
