What makes your favorite action-filled television show just that? Was it the characters’ personalities? Was it the inherent danger? Was it the pretty girls? Maybe all of that had something to do with it, but Gildshire is here to posit another possible answer. We bet that the cars had something to do with what made a show your favorite. Let’s take a walk through those grainy images of old.
Would Batman have been the same without the Batmobile? Would Knight Rider have been anything at all without KITT? How about that Gran Torino that was such a critical part of Starsky and Hutch? Heck, that ride was practically, not practically, actually, a co-star.
Well, just announced, cars, trucks and everything in between from the realms of Hollywood and music are going up for auction under the auspices of Los Angeles-headquartered GWS Auctions. Bidders can compete for items such as a mega-powerful Dodge Charger to Elvis’ last personal Cadillac, (pictured left) as well as some cars he gave as gifts and a Dodge Charger that appeared on screen in several shows.
Add in Rob Zombie’s iconic 1976 GMC Motorhome, the actual mobile home lived-in by Elvis and Priscilla Presley, and a fan-built Scooby Doo Mystery Machine. Why wouldn’t we call this auction a full plate of automotive genius? Pop culture and automotive excellence on a collision course.
Arguably, the shooting star of this show is Vin Diesel’s Dodge from the original “Fast and the Furious.” It looks like it’s a ’70 Charger but it’s actually a 1969 model with a conversion for visual effect. It carries a 430 horsepower V8, monitored by an automatic gearbox. The bidding opens at ten grand, and the FF style wheelies are up to you.
The roster of star cars continues with the 2008 Firebird we came to know and love as “KITT,” featured on “Knight Rider.” The auction prep paperwork specifies it as a Mustang GT, but it looks like a GT500 setup complete with the special aero design features.
KITT is an automatic since David Hasselhoff couldn’t do a clutch. Five grand is the opening bid listed for this car. Expect it to go for quite bit more than that. The too-cool KITT red-light-in-the-grill scanner is included in this sale.
