Angry Birds Makers Close Down Studio in London
The company behind the mobile game Angry Birds closed down its studio in London, after warning that its profits will likely fall. The head of games, Wilhelm Taht resigned on Friday, leaving Kati Levoranta in charge.
They announced the closure of their London studio on Twitter: “It’s with a heavy heart that I tell you the @rovio London Studio is going to close. Sad times for us, but I look back with genuine pride at my time with these talented and kind people. Been quite a ride.”
The company is from Finland and they have been warned that their licensing revenues could significantly decline by 40% this year. The main reason behind this potential decline is tough competition and marketing costs leading to a poor outlook.
The studio in London was opened in 2017 and the company went public in September 2017 with a value of £786 million.
However, on 22 February, the Finnish company issued a profit warning for 2018 which caused its shares to drop by 50%.
After announcing the closure of their London studio, Rovio announced that he wants to concentrate on studios in his homeland, Finland and a studio in Sweden.
The Finish game makers have employed seven game developers in London, UK.
The company saw rapid growth and profit after launching Angry Birds in 2009, however, they had a significant loss in 2015 when they had to fire a third of their staff.
Also, in 2016, the Angry Birds movie made $350 million in theatres across the world which helped the company to revive sales of the game.
A sequel movie is expected in 2019.
Gun Control vs Video Games
When the President Donald Trump made a statement that video games and violent movies have a great impact on children and young adults, nobody knew what to make of it. His tweet from six years ago on video games did not mean much to the public at the time: “Video game violence and glorification must be stopped – it is creating monsters!”
However, six years later, in a White House briefing, press secretary Sarah Sanders was asked about the president’s statement and his policy on gun control. Sarah Sanders said that Donald Trump will “be meeting with members of the video game industry to see what they can do on that front”.
Ms. Sanders response has been discussed on social media, where some criticized the president for blaming fictional guns, rather than actual firearms that lead to the latest shooting in Florida.
Reddit Co-Founder Backs Petition for Interracial Couple Emojis
Alexis Ohanian, Reddit co-founder wants emojis for interracial couples. “We want our kids to have emojis that look like their parents.”
The tech boss is the husband of tennis champion Serena Williams and he is backing Tinder’s petition to the Unicode Consortium to introduce emojis for interracial couples. The Unicode should vote on the proposal but that process can take up to two years before we can see interracial emojis.
At the moment, only 34 yellow skin tone emojis are available for relationships and families.
The Unicode Consortium is a non-profit organization which develops and reviews emoji – including making the emoji world more inclusive.
