Experts Concerned About Facial Recognition Technology
Based on announcements from Facebook, the U.K. police force and Live Nation, we might all have to get used to the idea of the global rise of facial recognition technology. Many smartphone users have their devices unlocked based on facial recognition and they don’t think twice about it.
Furthermore, Facebook announced that they will enable a facial recognition feature in Europe and Canada that is already active everywhere else in the world. The facial recognition feature can automatically tag any Facebook user in uploaded photos. The option is being used as a tool against false impersonation in the world of social networks. Live Nation also suggested a facial recognition technology that can allow attendees to pre-register with a photo and then come into a venue without any tickets needed.
To some, this might sound like a sci-fi movie and to some, a little creepy. In February, in Spain during the Mobile World Congress, 107,000 attendees had an option to come to the event without a ticket by using facial recognition technology. Only 4,225 attendees agreed to have their faces scanned in exchange for easy access. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to convince users that their biometric data will not be sold or misused in any way.
The facial recognition technology might also be used to fight crime. However, many experts and everyday people do not believe that this technology will not be misused. There are many regulations that we need to cover before we should start using this technology.
Elon Musk vs Mark Zuckerberg
When it comes to AI, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have opposite views. Mark Zuckerberg is saying: “Don’t worry, we’ll be fine,” while Elon Musk is worried and he tells us that we should be more careful. When we talk about the danger of AI, what exactly are we referring to? Are we scared that AI will take over? Can they take over? What do they need to take over? There is one thing that robots need in order to be able to take over.
They need to be aware that they are robots. Or in other words, they need to have a level of self-awareness which they don’t have. Certain animals have a level of awareness, knowing they are not humans such as chimpanzees or even dogs. Robots are not on that level, they are more on the level of a cockroach. However, experts believe that slowly robots will be on the level of a mouse, then on the mental level of a dog and then on the level of a monkey. Some predict that by the end of this century robots might be self-aware as much as humans, which can be very dangerous for our species.
Economists Love Google, Amazon, and Facebook
Companies like Facebook, Amazon, and Google have more data on citizens than most governments. As we witnessed recently, this data can be easily misused and manipulated. All this data is accessible and economists believe that those who have this data rule the world.
Economists can now easily study consumers’ behavior and find out more about citizens through social platforms without using any government portals.
The kind of information that Google has is incredible and we can’t even imagine the extent of the data collected by this and similar companies. Economists are using the data extensively and can find an answer to questions such as “What are people looking for? How much there are willing to pay? What is a cost of labor.” Google has been criticized for a long time, not only because they have data on potential buyers but they also have data on businesses as well. Just like Facebook, the platform which is mostly focused on their users’ information. Since Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp, they have a lot of information on anyone who is using one or more of these platforms. Amazon knows their buyers pretty well too. All the data they have on their buyers and suppliers can be used for manipulating buyers to purchase certain products or to copy the highest selling products and label them easily.
