If you love video games, the name Hideo Kojima probably rings a bell. The famous designer is responsible for the “Metal Gear” series starring iconic character “Solid Snake.” “Metal Gear” began way back in 1987 and popularized stealth games, as well as games with cinematic cut scenes, snarky humor, complex storylines, and more. Kojima has been working on a mysterious project for a long time known as “Death Stranding,” and we are just now finally getting more details. Video game updates are often few and far between it the project takes a long time, and the “Death Stranding” game is no exception. Here’s what we know so far:
Fact #1: It stars big names
If you watch the trailer and look at images, you’ll recognize Norman Reedus of “The Walking Dead” fame. Norman Reedus would have starred in Guillermo Del Toro and Kojima’s adaptation of a “Silent Hill” game, which was cancelled. Fans are happy that they reunited for “Death Stranding,” which luckily did not share the fate of “Silent Hills.” “Death Stranding” also stars Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Guillermo Del Toro, and Lindsay Wagner.
Fact #2: It’s an open world action game. Sort of.
Players have been dying to know what the “Death Stranding” game is actually like. At the Tribeca Film Festival in April, Kojima said the game is an open world action game.” However, there’s more to it than that. While introducing the trailer on Twitter, Kojima wrote that “Death Stranding” is a “completely new type of action game.” The main theme is connection, which has led some people to believe the game will feature some kind of collaboration with other players. We’ll have to wait and see.
Fact #3: A baby is important
In the first teaser of the game, Norman Reedus holds a baby in tears. That’s a pretty distinct image, and we know now that the baby (at some point) is living inside Reedus. It can also be seen in a container that Guillermo Del Toro holds. The baby isn’t just for shock value. It’s important to both the story and game mechanics, according to Kojima. Gamers theorize that the baby is necessary to travel through time, it’s a metaphor for Norman Reedus’ child, and so on.
Fact #4: It’s about saving the world
We know the plot of “Death Stranding” thanks to a generous nearly-9 minute trailer. Civilization as we know it has ended. Explosions trigger a series of supernatural events, opening up the world to dangerous creatures. Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus) must travel through this deadly new world and save humanity. The terrain is harsh and unpredictable, and if you die, you enter a purgatory-type state you must escape from. According to the site, every death has a consequence, so think through your choices carefully.
Fact #5: It comes out in November
In 2015, Kojima’s company announced it had partnered with Sony to create a new game. That would eventually become the “Death Stranding” game, so gamers have been waiting a long time. Finally, we got a release date: November 8th. Preordering for special editions is open now.
