Makeup tutorials are huge on Youtube. Watching someone put on makeup may seem boring to some, but it’s actually extremely helpful for millions of people who want to see a variety of looks from start to finish. One of the most popular Youtube vloggers for makeup is Nikkie De Jager, known as NikkieTutorials. Her tutorials include makeup reviews; cosplay looks like Wonder Woman and zombies; and fun videos where she applies only glitter to her face or does her makeup using just her fingers. She also shows viewers how to apply makeup inspired by celebrities like Katy Perry and Adele.
Nikkie made her first video at 2008. She was inspired after watching “The Hills” while home sick from school, and started looking up tutorials on the girls’ makeup. Fascinated by what she found, she began to do more research. Beauty runs in the family, as Nikkie’s mother owns a salon and does makeup, too. After three months of practice, Nikkie started her own Youtube channel at age 14. She began uploading weekly videos and amassing followers to become the Netherlands’ most subscribed beauty channel.
A lot of people might have just stopped there, but Nikkie is serious about her career and doesn’t consider her videos as just a hobby. She took courses from a prominent Dutch makeup artist and became friends with him. He signed her to his agency where she worked for magazines and shows. In 2012, she took part in an ad campaign for Volkswagen about how applying makeup while driving is dangerous, while the next year, she was the cover girl for “Fashionista” magazine in June. In 2014, she left her agency to become a freelance hair and makeup artist.
While she worked and went to school, Nikkie continued her Youtube videos. She has more than 6 million subscribers on both Youtube and Instagram. She loves glitter, and has spoken about the concept of “makeup-shaming.” This is when people feel like they can only wear certain makeup, or are judged for wearing “too much.” Makeup shaming and slut-shaming often go hand-in-hand, since a lot of makeup is often associated with being promiscuous. If someone wants to wear bright neon colors and lots of glitter, Nikkie is all for it.
Nikkie’s latest big-time project was her “Power of Makeup” kit for Too Faced. The kit consists of nine eyeshadows, two blushes, a bronzer, a highlighter, a liquid eyeliner, and several travel-sized items. The kit sold extremely well. However, it wasn’t long before blogger Jeffree Star came out and said that Too Faced had sold Nikkie short and paid her too little. Star tagged Too Faced founder Jerrod Blandino in a series of tweets.
The quality of the kit has also been contentious. Another popular beauty blogger, Tati (who goes by GlamLifeGuru) reviewed Nikkie’s palette and pointed out that it seemed like two companies were producing the makeup, so the quality was different from kit to kit. She also said she had heard about “shady” dealings going on with Too-Faced, and citing personal experiences as well as what she believed happened to Nikkie, Tati has said she will not be reviewing any Too-Faced products in the future. Nikkie herself has not commented on the controversy.
